I would be remiss if I didn’t give a shout out to my other half once in a while, and Valentine’s day seemed like a good excuse to do so.
He’s the guy behind the camera, my sounding board, my editor and my number one cheerleader. I could not have chosen a better person to journey through life with.
For those of you who don’t know us but follow along on this crazy journey of ours, I thought I’d give a little insight into how Mike and I came to be together because as that quote goes “everyone’s love story is beautiful, but ours is my favourite”.
Mike and I met and were friends for a couple of years before anything ever happened between us. We worked in the same building – he was a banker and I was a barista putting myself through university. It was one of those “right people, wrong time” kind of things and although I always thought he was super cute, I was caught up in school and another relationship and he was a guy in his 20’s doing what guys in their 20’s do.
Eventually, all of the stars aligned and a girlfriend brought him along to my 25th birthday party. Everything sort of felt different then. I remember getting butterflies watching him walk up to my door. There was chemistry that I hadn’t felt with him before and I KNEW something was brewing. He didn’t stay long… he escorted us gals to the club, hung out by the bar sipping on a vodka soda and then excused himself with one of those European double kisses and I basically swooned.
Two days later while I was sitting in class I got a text message asking if I wanted to go see a movie. We never did see that movie – we went for dinner instead – but from then on we were hooked on each other. Hilariously, we both played a short version of the hard-to-get game which we called off after a couple of weeks because the truth was, we liked each other. A LOT. Then life started rolling really fast. You know that line that Dierks Bently sings? “When you know who you wanna spend the rest of your life with, you wanna start the rest of your life as soon as you can”… yeah, it’s true.
We moved in together 6 months after we started dating, got engaged a year and a half later and married a year after that. Fast forward another nearly three years and we have an almost one year old son and a whole lot of life behind us.
Each year that has brought another milestone has also brought me new reasons to fall in love with him all over again and bringing our son into the world was no exception. I LOVE seeing Mike with our son… there is no greater, more fulfilling thing for me than to watch them together. Mike is such an incredible father and source of support to me both throughout my pregnancy and in this first year of parenthood. He has jumped all over helping with night feedings and diaper changes and sleep training and I’ve never seen someone so excited to experience life all over again through the eyes of their baby.
So, to my love, partner in crime, soul mate, other half, encourager, leader and follower, happy Valentine’s day. Luca and I love you to the moon and back and then there and back again after that. <3
